June Article: Unplug Illinois Day

Hi O’Fallon Residents,

Did know you that the 5th Annual Unplug Illinois Day is coming up in about one month? What is Unplug Illinois Day you might ask. It is a campaign created by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association that encourages people to unplug from their electronic devices and plug into play, creativity, friendship, adventure, and family. Your friends are happy to take part with a couple of programs for this special event on July 15th, 2023.

Our first event we are offering is a Field Day in Community Park. This event will have a wide variety of games and activities from 12pm – 2pm. Bring out the whole family for this fun, friendly day of competition. Our second event is a Cornhole Tournament. This tournament will be held at the O’Fallon Station. Bags start flying at 4pm. A competitive division and backyard division will be offered if enough teams sign up. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Are events like these not your cup of tea? No worries, Unplug Day is about more than just special events. It’s a great opportunity to get out and explore your local parks! You can visit Rock Springs Rotary Park and explore 1.54 miles of paved trails, and a variety of unpaved trails through the park. You can also enjoy the day with your four-legged canine friend at one of our two dog parks. Rocks Springs also boasts a phenomenal playground structure for the kids to play on.

The Family Sports is another great destination to visit. There are more than just sports fields at this park. There are 2.17 miles of trails to walk, run, or bike. You can spend some time fishing at the south pond by ball field #4, or at the north pond by the grass soccer fields. We’ve also got everyone’s favorite Splash Pad to visit on a hot day, plus two playgrounds for kids to play on!

Community Park, right in the middle of town, has something for everyone. There is an inner walking trail, an outer walking trail, playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, and the O’Fallon Memorial Pool (open 11a – 5p on Unplug Day). Community Park will also be the home of our new all abilities playground.

Hesse Park, Thoman Park, and Savannah Hills Park also have a variety of amenities you can take advantage of on this day to unplug. Hesse has basketball courts, pickleball courts, ball fields, playground, and access to the Illini Bike Trail. Thoman Park has a short walking trail and playground to take advantage of. Savannah Hills is a great neighborhood park, with a fun playground for all ages.

This statewide campaign is made to educate the public on the values of parks and recreation. To view more information on Unplug Illinois Day, please visit www.unplugillinois.org. We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events or out in our wonderful parks.
